I couldn't determine whether the leather parts were real leather or faux leather, but as long as it looks good and holds up, it doesn't really matter. Perhaps a shade darker than shown in the picture. The double fastening makes it very comfortable to wear, but when leaning back in a chair that supports the lower back (e.g., office chairs), the rear buckle pair presses a bit into the back.
